Must fiber optic media converters be used in pairs?

Fiber media converter used as photoelectric conversion equipment is usually in pairs, but also can appear fiber media converter and fiber optic switches, fiber media converter SFP media converter with matching use also is very normal, in principle, as long as the optical transmission wavelength is the same, signal encapsulation format is the same and is supported by some sort of agreement of optical fiber communication can be achieved.

In general, dual-fiber (normal communication requires two fibers) media converters do not distinguish between transmitter and receiver. Only single-fiber media converters (normal communication requires only one fiber) have separate transmitter and receiver.

Both dual-fiber media converters and single-fiber media converters are compatible when used in pairs of different brands. However, different rates (100MB and gigabit) and different wavelengths (1310nm and 1300nm) are not allowed to communicate with each other. In addition, even a single fiber media converter of the same brand and a pair of dual fiber media converters are not allowed to communicate with each other.

Dual fiber media converter has TX port (transmitter port) and RX port (receiver port), both of which emit the same wavelength of 1310nm and receive the same wavelength of 1310nm, so the connection adopts two parallel optical fiber cross connection. Single-fiber media converter has only one port, so it needs to realize both transmitting and receiving functions. It uses WDM technology to transmit two optical signals of different wavelengths in an optical fiber so as to realize transmitting and receiving. They typically use wavelengths of 1310nm and 1550nm.

Fiber media converters of different brands all support Ethernet protocol, and they can communicate with the standard media converters. However, some media converters will add some functions (such as mirroring function) and support more protocols, so these functions will not be supported if the other media converters do not have them.
