What is an Industrial Power-over-Ethernet switch (PoE switch)? A PoE switch is an Ethernet switch that transmits electrical power over the same cable that carries data. When other network devices are connected to the switch, it detects which ones are PoE-compatible and automatically enables PoE power transmission to those network endpoints. When PoE switches are designed for use in harsh or extreme environmental conditions, such as industrial automation, military, marine, mining, oil-and-gas, or railway applications, the device may be called a PoE industrial switch, or industrial PoE switches. An industrial-grade design may provide resistance to moisture, dust, dirt, oil, or other foreign substance that might otherwise damage the equipment. PoE switches that feature industrial-grade design may be called a managed PoE switch or an unmanaged PoE switch.
Industrial Grade Design
The electronic components within an integrated printed circuit board (PCB) are not designed for harsh conditions, so they may be prone to overheating when installed in locations without environmental and temperature controls. Similarly if the switch was designed using connectors not rated for these conditions, proper contact between device and cables may fail. To prevent such failure, every component used in industrial temperature switches must be designed and tested to handle extended operating temperatures and other harsh environmental conditions. An Industrial grade switch may be designed for mounting on a DIN rail‐a standard metal rail commonly used for mounting industrial control equipment. Such a device may be called a DIN rail PoE Ethernet switch or simply DIN rail PoE switch. The term DIN Rail refers to the German standards body, Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN), which published the original specifications. The specification was later adopted as European (EN) and international (IEC) standards. Industrial PoE Ethernet switches are often designed in conformance with Ingress Protection Code (IP code) IP30 or IP67 standards.
Benefits of PoE Switches
PoE, sometimes referred to as “inline power”, significantly reduces the number of wires that must be strung to install a network. An industrial PoE Gigabit Ethernet Switch can deliver high-speed voice and data transmission while powering endpoint devices over long distances. By eliminating the need for external power supplies, additional electrical wiring, power outlets, and so on, a Power-over-Ethernet switch saves on installation and maintenance costs. Additional advantages include faster overall project installation, greater flexibility for the location of installed equipment, less downtime, lower wiring costs, and lower power costs.
Application Environments
Patton’s FiberPlex and Connect-IT PoE industrial Ethernet switches are designed for use in such demanding environments as an industrial automation network or an industrial control system. You may find a FiberPlex industrial-grade PoE network switch deployed in such applications as railways, water treatment, substation automation, roads and tunnels, as well as factory automation, IP surveillance, building automation systems (BAS), and building management systems (BMS).
